North Coast Wine Co
A New Era of Winemakers
Coming from six generations of wine growers, our friends up north decided to forge their own new journey. Where the iconic California redwood trees meet the Sonoma Coast, North Coast Wine Company was born. Our team was tasked to bring life to this adventurous and purposeful brand, as well as the unique wine series that powered its launch.
North Coast Wine Co.
Strategy & Identity
Our challenge was to uniquely position North Coast Wine Co. not only in relation to Sonoma Coast wines but California wines as a whole. After completing a thorough market analysis, category territory mapping, and a tour of the coastal mountains and redwood trees we determined to head in an adventurous direction for the brand. With NCWC seeking inspiration from the many AVAs and multifaceted terroir of California’s North Coast wine region, every bottle of their wine conveys a sense of discovery and exploration—and we wanted the brand identity to do the same. Through natural textures, natural color palette, and contemporary typography, we designed a new forward-thinking logomark system and visual identity that feels as traditional as the generations of winegrowers from which it was born.
Label design comes in all shapes and forms, and in the case of Outerbound, it started with a carving knife and a linocut block of wood. On an expedition to the nooks and crannies of Sonoma wine country, our team toured the scenic mountains and iconic landmarks behind each region of Outerbound Wine. We then translated this adventure into a series of hand-etched wood carvings, the first step in developing the package for the lineup. Each label was then beautifully debossed with one of these woodcut carvings and accented by a path of copper foil, capturing the unique characteristics of each region's terroir.
In our digital experience, North Coast Wine Company replicates a journey of discovery. The website juxtaposes cool ocean waters with ancient redwood trees through scrolling animation and custom photography. Additionally, through concise navigation and a strategically organized information structure, the website provides detailed, regional education for the user who seeks it, making it easy for wine lovers to discover the unique soils and climates of each AVA.
From the warm sun-kissed hills of Alexander Valley to the coastal, fog-laden vineyard scapes of Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast, North Coast Wine Company had an array of environments that were important to capture to portray the uniqueness of the brand. With a detailed day-of production game plan in place, we loaded up the drone and hopped in the van to catch the morning fog in the valley and golden hour over the hills. The result: striking photography, intentionally shot to not only grab attention but also educate consumers and transport people visually to the beauty of the North Coast.
